The Light That Leads Us Home.
Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord – Year A | January 4
Brothers and sisters in Christ,
today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. This beautiful feast reminds us that Jesus is revealed not only to a few, but to the whole world. The light of Christ shines beyond borders, cultures, and languages, guiding all who are sincerely searching for truth and hope. As the Magi followed the star, we too are invited to open our hearts, recognize God at work in our lives, and rejoice that God’s saving love is meant for everyone.
The first reading speaks of light rising over Jerusalem and nations walking by that light. Long before the Magi ever saw the star, God had already promised that His salvation would reach beyond borders and cultures. This tells us something beautiful: God’s plan has always been bigger than our expectations. When we feel small, forgotten, or far away, today’s feast reminds us that God’s light knows how to find us wherever we are.
In the second reading, Saint Paul speaks about a mystery that is now revealed—that all people are heirs of God’s promise in Christ. Epiphany is not just about visitors from the East; it is about us. We are included. We belong. No matter our past, our struggles, or our doubts, Christ came for us too. This challenges us to look at others differently. If God welcomes all, then we are called to do the same—with our words, our attitudes, and our actions.
The Gospel brings everything together in a very human story. The Magi follow a star, but they still experience confusion, fear, and resistance. King Herod is troubled, and his fear turns into jealousy and violence. This contrast is important. When Christ enters our lives, we can respond in two ways: like the Magi, with humility and joy, or like Herod, with fear and the need to protect our own power. Epiphany asks us honestly: What kind of heart do I have when God challenges my plans?
“Having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.” Brothers and sisters, this is a message for us today and for our lives.
God warned them in a dream, showing us that when we sincerely seek the Lord, God guides our conscience. He protects those who listen. The Magi obeyed God rather than human authority. This teaches us that following Jesus sometimes means making difficult choices, even when they are not popular or convenient. For us believers today, “going home by another way” means allowing Jesus to change the direction of our lives. It means leaving behind the “Herod paths” we may still be walking on: the path of dishonesty instead of truth, the path of hatred instead of forgiveness, the path of pride instead of humility, the path of selfishness instead of love and service. Epiphany reminds us that Christ is revealed not only to be admired, but to be followed. The Magi did not just kneel before Jesus; they rearranged their lives around Him.
May the example of the Magi inspire us to choose the road that leads to life, peace, and true joy—the road that always begins at the feet of Jesus and continues in a transformed life. Amen.
